The Christian Schools of Jerusalem: Why Education and Dialogue Matter

September 2026 — Christian schools in Jerusalem faced an unexpected disruption at the start of the 2026–27 academic year after more than 70 teachers and staff members from the West Bank did not receive renewed entry permits in time. School leaders said the absence of essential staff made it impossible to begin the year safely and normally.

The schools announced a suspension of classes on September 1. Aid to the Church in Need later reported that the strike was called off after one day, following the renewal of some permits. The episode nevertheless caused anxiety for students, parents and educators.

Christian schools have long contributed to Jerusalem’s educational and social life. Their stability matters not only to Christian families but also to the broader community. Administrative processes affecting teachers should be clear, timely and attentive to the educational needs of children.

Supporting Israel and strengthening Jewish-Christian relations should include honest engagement with issues affecting Christian institutions. A constructive approach recognizes Israel’s security responsibilities while encouraging fair procedures and continuity of education.

Dialogue between authorities, school leaders and families can help prevent similar disruptions and protect the city’s diverse educational landscape.
