Six Decades of Ecumenical Research: Christians and Jews Continue the Work of Dialogue

September 23, 2026 — The Ecumenical Fraternity of Theological Research in Israel marked six decades of work with a conference at Jerusalem University College focused on collaboration between Christians and Jews in teaching and research.

Academic dialogue is an important part of interfaith relations. It creates space to examine Scripture, history and theology carefully, and it allows scholars to challenge inherited assumptions with evidence and mutual respect.

For Christians, serious study of the Jewish context of the Bible can deepen understanding of the faith’s origins. For Jewish participants, dialogue can offer opportunities to explain Jewish tradition on its own terms and address misunderstandings that have persisted for generations.

Such work does not require theological agreement. It requires intellectual honesty, respect for distinct traditions and a willingness to learn from one another. The result can be better teaching in seminaries, universities and congregations.

At a time when public debate is often polarized, six decades of sustained scholarly engagement offers a valuable example: durable relationships are built through patience, study and personal encounter.
