‘For Zion’s Sake’: A Catholic Initiative Seeks a Stronger Relationship with Israel

August 10, 2026 — A Catholic initiative focused on repairing the Church’s relationship with Israel drew attention to an important question: how can Christians build a relationship with the Jewish people that is rooted in respect, historical honesty and meaningful cooperation?

Jewish-Christian relations carry a complicated history. Centuries of anti-Jewish teaching and persecution left deep wounds. Modern dialogue has made significant progress, but that progress cannot be taken for granted. It requires education, leadership and the willingness to confront prejudice wherever it appears.

A constructive Christian relationship with Israel begins by recognizing that Jewish identity and Jewish attachment to the land are not modern inventions. They are bound up with the history, texts and collective memory of the Jewish people. Christians can affirm Israel’s legitimacy and security while also engaging thoughtfully with difficult policy questions and the rights and dignity of everyone in the region.

The goal should not be a shallow alliance of convenience. It should be a durable partnership in which Christians and Jews can speak candidly, protect religious freedom and stand together against antisemitism.
